Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Players are granted the option to contest specific rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to review other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
